Sargent Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon – 2013 – Wine Review – ALDI

10/09/2016

cabernet sauvignon, sargent canyon, california, wine, ALDI, central coastOctober 9, 2016
For a Cab, the color is a medium-red.  This one tastes like a Cab.  Mild tannins, a little bit of oak and the grapes add the character and the dryness of a Cab.  There are no off-tastes unlike this recently reviewed wine. This is a fairly good wine, but not a very good or great Cab.  There’s still quite a bit of roughness about this one.  It’s not as smooth as a better Cab.

Cabs are on the stronger side of the wine taste scale.  If your preferences run towards milder wines, this one is probably not for you.  It would be hard to find an everyday food that would overpower this wine.  On the other hand, this wine would overpower most milder foods.   This was a September ALDI’s Wine Of The Month.  However, it also seems to be a regular on the ALDI wine shelves.  At $6.99 a bottle, this is a value price compared to a similar quality California Cab elsewhere.

Deutsche Küche – Coconut Spritz Shortbread Cookies – ALDI – Food Review

There’s nothing very special going on here.  These were on the shelf for what used to be ALDI’s Oktoberfest, but in September.  That generally means they won’t be around until next spring (Mayfest?) and next autumn.  As stated on the label these are shortbread cookies.  They’re a little on the sweetish side for shortbread.  Additionally, as you can see, they’re half coated with coconut sprinkled milk chocolate.  If you like shortbread cookies, and shortbread crumbs on your shirt, blouse or sweater, these will suffice just as well as any.

Price $1.99 per box (12 cookies)       Calories  140 per cookie

ALDI – Casa Mamita – Salsa Con Queso – Medium – Food Review

Uniquely dippable, even straight out of the refrigerator, that’s what this product is.  Some might call it thin, but that depends on your needs and likes.  The consistency is almost as fluid when cold as at room temperature.  If you like your nachos hot, it also heats up well in the microwave on tortilla chips.  Little pieces of jalapeno in the yellow/orange cheese add the heat which is about right for the claimed medium rating on the label.  Unless you get a little piece of jalapeno, it’s not very spicy at all.

However, if you’d like to use this for cooking, read more.  (more…)

Moser Roth – White Stracciatella – White Cookies – ALDI – Food Review

aldi, white chocolate, moser roth, white cookies, white stracciatellaSilky smooth versus little crunchies, that’s the choice between these two white chocolates.   Both of these were rescues.  That’s right, in helping reduce food wastage both were rescued from the clearance rack.  These will fill you with love almost as much as that rescued pound puppy while tasting considerably better than that lick on the lips.  And I’m sure that works equally well from the puppy’s point of view.

Choceur Blueberry Acai Dark Chocolate Covered Superberries – Food Review – ALDI

It’s not really dark chocolate.  But it’s not milk chocolate either.  Here’s the reason, it’s made in the USA.  But it’s still good.  Too good!

Why does the USA matter?  Because, the USA seems to have an aversion to dark chocolate.  Other Choceur products I’ve tried were imported from Germany where dark chocolate is typically more robust.   While disappointed that the chocolate wasn’t what I was expecting, these are still very good.  In fact so good it’s relatively easy to eat the whole 7 ounce package in a short time.  At 170 calories per listed serving, and 5 servings per package, that’s 850 calories – about 1/2 of the total calories most of us need for an entire day!  So ration yourself.

 Price $2.79 (7 ounce package – 5 servings)    Calories 170 per serving (10 pieces)

ALDI – Simply Nature Organic Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats – Food Review

ALDI-OrganicSteelCutOats-4635Half between steel cut and rolled oaks, these oats have a chewy texture surrounded by a very thick creamy ‘soup’ .   It’s sort of a best of both worlds approach.  The package also carries the USDA Organic seal.
