Trader Joe’s – Spicy Cheese Crunchies – Food Review

Trader Joe, Spicy Cheese Crunchies, price, calories, nutrition, review, snackJune 19, 2018

Have you ever gone on a family road trip and arrived at your destination looking like everyone in the car has just left a zombie brain orgy?  It’s the Simply Irresistible snacks like this that fill every rest area vending machine that are the cause.  No, these will not turn you and the kids into mindless zombies.  It’s the colorful coatings of these snacks that make it appear so.  Whether flaming red, Big Bird yellow or the newly trendy orange-hair orange, these snack coatings with the tenacity of tattoos are sure to find their way from the food onto the hands, face and clothes requiring a visit by Shakespeare to remove them.  “Out, damned spot!”

Trader Joe, Spicy Cheese Crunchies, price, calories, nutrition, review, snackGetting back to the review.  These remind me of Flamin’ Crunchy Cheetos or any one of several similar snacks.  Trader Joe puts plenty of heat onto the snack.  If you like that kind of heat and like snacks, you’ll no doubt like these.  And like mine, your rather large bag of this snack will empty out just as fast as those smaller bags from the vending machines.  Enough said.

Trader Joe’s – Veggie Corn Dogs – Food Review

12/02/2017

trader joe, review, price, calories, nutrition, veggie corn dogsDecember 2, 2017
The corn is there. The dog is almost there.  This dog will hunt.

I’m always on the lookout for a veggie meat substitute.  More specifically, I’m always looking for a good veggie meat substitute.  The best I’ve found so far is Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo.  These veggie corn dogs aren’t quite up to that standard.  But still, they’re pretty good.  What’s better than that is, they’re pretty good veggie “junk” food.

trader joe, review, price, calories, nutrition, veggie corn dogsThe texture of the dog is just about right. Even the color is about right. The taste is more of a neutral taste than a real hot dog. The fatty moisture from a real hot dog is obviously missing. However as long as it’s not overcooked, the dog remains fairly moist.  Watch the time in the microwave, just a little too much time (even just 10 or 15 seconds) dries out both the dog and the corn.

Overall, just like a real corn dog,  the corn bread makes up around half of the taste and texture. The veggie dog in the center adds some flavor and texture, but more importantly does not take much away in the form of negatives.

These are slightly smaller than a standard corn dog and missing the animal fat, so the calories are lower.  Unfortunately, the sodium content is relatively high just like a real corn dog.  They’re labelled as meatless and veggie, but not vegetarian.  So check the ingredient label to make sure this conforms to your personal vegetarian standards.

Trader Joe’s – Pumpkin Tortilla Chips – Food Review

11/05/2017

Trader Joe's, Pumpkin Tortilla Chips, review, price, calories, nutritionNovember 5, 2017

Almost burnt pumpkin pie crust, that’s what these taste like.  You know, no matter what we do, some part of that pumpkin pie crust is going to be burnt.  Now I’m not talking about the stuff we buy from the store.  That never seems to have burnt edges.  I’m talking about the stuff that comes out of our oven.  Whether it be a store-bought frozen pie cooked at home or a from-scratch homemade pie, once it gets in our oven there’s some part of that crust that’s going to be burnt.  Wrap the edges with foil or stick a pin in a voodoo doll, some part of that crust is going to get burned.  The oven makers must program that into their ovens.  There’s no avoiding it.

Trader Joe's, Pumpkin Tortilla Chips, review, price, calories, nutritionThese chips don’t taste like the absolutely burnt portions of crust, but like the almost burnt pieces next to the very burnt stuff.  More specifically, it’s the parts of the crust where the filling overflows onto the edges.  You know what those are.  In fact, those pieces of crust are actually the pieces I break off and eat first.  They sort of build anticipation for the rest of the pie with the pumpkin filling covered with whipped cream.  Hmm,  sounds like I know what I’m having for dessert tonight.

But enough about pumpkin pie.  The first ingredient on the label of these chips is corn.  So these are mostly corn tortilla chips with pumpkin puree used to add some pumpkin flavor. The back of the bag suggests these will hold up to any salsa.  I have no reason to doubt that since they are very stiff chips.  But it’s the taste of most salsas I question.  It seems to me that what’s needed is a pumpkin pie dip/salsa to make these complete.

ALDI – Deutsche Küche – Herring Fillets in Curry Pineapple – Food Review

10/29/2017

aldi, herring, pineapple curry, deutsche kuche food, review, price, calories, nutritionOctober 29, 2017

Herring, the adolescent sardine, what’s not to like?  If you’ve ever avoided herring because, well it’s herring, this may change your mind.  This herring comes packed in a not spicy curry sauce.  The curry is a little sweet, and a little pineappley. The curry disguises very well whatever preconceived notion of taste you may have of herring. The herring itself comes as fillets with a nice firm texture. And no, the herring does not taste fishy.  The herring also does not taste or look like any of that pickled stuff people bring out for New Year’s.  If you were worrying about that, forget about it.  On top of that it’s nutritious with: low carbs, relatively high protein and a more fun way to get some omega-3 than one of those gelatin oil filled capsules.  This is an ALDI Oktoberfest perennial offering, so you won’t be seeing it on the shelves until either next September for Oktoberfest or possibly next May for Maifest.

ALDI – Deutsche Küche – Museli Bars – Black Forest Cake – Food Review

This is not a very sweet tasting bar, but that’s part of the appeal.  There’s a nice undercurrent of sour cherries and dark chocolate.  Oats are oats.  The oats in this bar are a little tough and tasteless, as they are in most of these types of bars. But the cherry and chocolate let this bar stand out above the rest.  If you’re ever in the Black Forest or even the Eifel Forest take a few of these alone.

I suspect these were part of ALDI’s Oktoberfest.  So they may not be around again until next Oktoberfest or next spring for Maifest.

ALDI – Millville – Chewy Granola Trail Mix Bar – Dark Chocolate Cherry – Food Review

10/03/2017

ALDI, Millville, Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars, snack, review, price, nutritionOctober 3, 2017

Oats, nuts, fruit loosely held together by a mildly sweet syrup. This is not a hard granola bar. In fact it will bend and start to break apart just getting it out of the package.  There’s just enough syrupy binder  to hold everything together. As a result, this is not a very sweet bar. If you’re looking to avoid something so sweet that your teeth start to hurt, you may like this. The other benefit is your fingers don’t feel like they’re covered with super glue. The mixture of ingredients in the bar should also help slowly feed energy to your body as the bar is digested. That will help to avoid an immediate sugar high. The fruit and nuts in the bar are more enjoyable than the oats in the bar. That’s to be expected. The chocolate was mostly hiding in my bars.

ALDI, Millville, Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars, snack, review, price, nutritionOn the trail, the 140 calories in the bar should be good for about 1.5 to 2 miles down a relatively flat trail at a moderate pace. Off the trail, as a snack, that’s how far you’ll need to walk to burn off the calories. Did I just ruin your day?

Trader Joe’s – Tofurky Italian Sausage – Food Review

06/14/2017

trader joe, review, nutrition, price, calories, tofurky italian sausageJune 14, 2017

It’s not Italian sausage.  BUT, for a meatless meat (yes it’s labeled vegan), it has the texture, if not exactly the taste, of a meat.  The texture is the biggest problem with many meatless meats. They, or we, can always work on how it tastes.  In its own right, it’s fairly good tasting, but on the bland side.

Trader Joe’s – Ghost Pepper Potato Chips – Food Review

06/03/2017

trader joe, review, nutrition, price, calories, ghost pepper potato chipsJune 3, 2017
Everyone wants to be hot. Most of us are not. And so it is with these chips.

While still not for the squeamish, these chips do not live up to the reputation of the howling hoblin hotty Habanero ghost pepper (Bhut jolokia) for which they’re named.

Most of the heat in the chips is felt on the lips.  The best way to bring a quick tingle is to hold a chip between the lips for a bit.  Call it a lip lick.   As the seasoning varies some by chip, the more seasoned chips can also be felt on the tongue. The rest of the mouth is mildly involved by comparison unless the chips are taken by the handful and held in the mouth for some seconds. There’s a little earthy taste to these chips aside from the heat. That gives them some added interest. Perhaps just overpowered by the heat, the chips did not taste salty.

trader joe, review, nutrition, price, calories, ghost pepper potato chipsIf you like heat in your food these will satisfy that need without causing a trip to the emergency room (not guaranteed), because in these chips the ghost is just a will-o’-the-wisp.

ALDI – Clancy’s Guacamole Tortilla Chips – Food Review

05/31/2017

ALDI, Clancy's, Guacamole Tortilla Chips, Nutrition, Review, Calories, PriceMay 31, 2017

If you need a guacamole fix, these are unlikely to satisfy.  As a chip, they’re okay and in some ways sort of a mild Doritos.

Rather than have the flavor sprinkled on as an afterthought, these chips seem to have the flavor “baked” into the flour of the tortilla.  In addition there’s still the traditional sprinkle of seasoning coating the chips.  There’s a faint hint of guacamole in the flavor.  As a flavored chip, the flavor is not objectionable. These, or at least this bag, do not taste overly salty.   And like almost any chip, you’re likely to eat many more of these than you should.

ALDI, Clancy's, Guacamole Tortilla Chips, Nutrition, Review, Calories, PriceI suspect these are a seasonal item.  Although they showed up well after Cinco De Mayo, which one would think is the appropriate time?  For me, a regular tortilla chip dipped in some real guacamole is the way to go.

ALDI – Roasted Nut Bar – Almond Crunch – Food Review

05/20/2017

ALDI, Roasted Nut Bar, Nutrition, Review, Calories, Price, SnackMay 20, 2017

In a seemingly endless number of nutty snack bars, here’s one more.  To the possible delight of many readers, if this one becomes a permanent resident on the ALDI shelves, this bar seems to be a variation of the very popular but short-lived Simple Nut Bar.

Without having a Simple Nut Bar present for a side-by-side comparison, this Roasted Nut Bar seems very similar.  From memory, my preference would be the Simple Nut Bar.  But I could easily live with this one.  Like the Simple Nut Bar, this one is mostly nuts.  Comparing the back of the boxes (see Simple Nut Bar box here), the ingredients are very similar.  Both are products of Canada.  That leads me to believe these are produced by the same company and are just variations of the product formula.

ALDI, Roasted Nut Bar, Nutrition, Review, Calories, Price, SnackThere’s a minimal amount of sticky binder to hold all the nuts together (almonds, peanuts and sunflower seeds).   If you’re looking for sweet, or chocolate, this is not for you.  As the bar is mostly nuts, it is hard and crunchy.  For a snack food, this has a reasonably good nutrition mix.  Of course, being mostly nuts, a high percent of the calories come from fat (most likely the nut oils).  Carbohydrates are lower than many other snack bars.  While not a high power protein bar, these do have an okay 6 g of protein.  Calories  180 per bar    Price $2.79 per box (6 bars in a box)
