ALDI – Black Angus Bacon Cheddar Beef Patties – Food Review

05/23/2018

aldi, review, price, calories, nutrition, black angus, bacon cheddar beef pattiesMay 23, 2018

This isn’t a bar burger.  Whatever your opinion about bars, when they have burgers, those burgers are often some of the best at any restaurant.  These, on the other hand, are a reasonably priced source of nutrients that taste okay.

There are a couple of odd things about this burger.  First, the cooking instructions are for a frozen patty, whether skillet, grill or broiler.  No microwave instructions are given.  When cooked in a skillet, the frozen patty tended to raise in the center resulting in a nice ring of cooked patty around the edges and the center needing longer to cook through.  I suppose putting a weight on the patty would be the way to correct this?  Some of the cheese in the burger tended to melt and ooze out while cooking.  I did not try the broiler or grill.  Second, there was noticeable fibrous material in the patty.  This affected the texture somewhat.  While there is bacon added to the patty, it didn’t seem to add much to the flavor or texture.

There are more calories and fat in each patty compared to an equal portion of 80/20 ground beef.  Both of those numbers may be due to the added cheese and bacon in the patty.  Or there could be a higher percentage of fat in the beef.

aldi, review, price, calories, nutrition, black angus, bacon cheddar beef pattiesWhile convenient and reasonably priced at $3.45 per pound (compared to ground beef alone), you’ll probably be able to build a better burger by starting with straight ground beef, adding a slice of cheese near the end of cooking and then adding a couple of slices of cooked bacon on top of that.

Calories  460 per patty (151g)

Price  $6.89 per box of 6 patties (2 lbs. total – 908g)

ALDI – Earth Grown Asian Veggie Burger – Vegan – Food Review

05/19/2018

ALDI, earth grown, asian veggie burger, price, review, calories, nutrition, veganMay 19, 2018

I’m not sure what makes these Asian, as opposed to just a nicely flavored veggie burger.  I guess they had to pick a name because the box is too small to write “Just a nicely flavored veggie vegan burger.”  Maybe I should follow that kind of thinking and change the name of this blog to “Asian.”

The flavor is a little sweet and a very little bit spicy. The burger firms up nicely in the microwave, not falling apart like others.  A pet peeve I have with most veggie burgers is they’re generally on the thin side and are overwhelmed somewhat by a bun.  Putting two burgers on a bun produces a better ratio.  But I wish they’d make a single burger a little thicker/heavier so we don’t have to double up.

ALDI, earth grown, asian veggie burger, price, review, calories, nutrition, veganThis seems to be another special item that’s only around a week.  I don’t know when it will grace the freezer cases again.  The product is labeled vegan and the ingredient label (not shown here) tends to agree with that designation.  At $3.69 per box, this is priced higher than the regular vegan veggie burger at $2.49.

Calories  130 per burger

Price  $3.69 per box of 4 veggie burgers (10 oz. total – 284g)

ALDI – Bremer Shepherd’s Pie – Food Review

05/14/2018

ALDI, bremer, shepherds pie, price, review, calories, nutritionMay 14, 2018

This was surprisingly good.  The mashed potatoes topping the beef were okay. But the beef mixture underneath the potatoes was very tasty.  Tasty is one thing that’s missing from many frozen packaged items targeted to the customers’ lowest common denominator taste buds.  This is an exception.  The beef mixture was very beefy.  It also had that comfort food quality to it.  It’s something I’ll probably pick up again.

This was prepared in the microwave.  The 22 minute microwave time on the box proved more than adequate in my mid-sized microwave to reach well past the required 165 degree finished temperature.  Some of the mashed potatoes on the edges actually started to brown.  There are directions for oven cooking also which will set you back around 55 minutes.

ALDI, bremer, shepherds pie, price, review, calories, nutritionIt was difficult to remove a portion from the cooking container to the plate in the nicely layered way it appears in the box.  The beef mixture on the bottom was a little soupy and didn’t hold together well.  Oven cooking may firm up everything better, but no promises made.  Regardless, the flavor was nice.

The box suggests 4 servings per package.  However, if this is the only thing you’ll be having, that’s not going to be much of a meal.  More realistically this is enough for two people.  For 2 people, at $3 per serving, this is not a bad deal for a comforting filling dinner.  Heck, there’s even some corn, peas and carrots floating around with the beef.

Price $5.99 – 30 oz (851g) package

ALDI – Moser Roth Dark Sea Salt Chocolate – Food Review

05/10/2018

ALDI, moser roth, dark sea salt chocolate, price, review, calories, nutritionMay 10, 2018

Moser Roth is generally a step up from the Choceur chocolates at ALDI.  Like the other Moser Roth chocolates reviewed here, this chocolate is a fine European-style chocolate – meaning there’s a higher concentration of cocoa in the product than most chocolates made in the US.  Although not specified on the label, my guess is this would be around a 60% cocoa chocolate.  The label does tell us there’s sea salt added to the chocolate.  I’m not sure what the sea salt adds to the product, but more importantly it doesn’t take anything away.  Sea salt or not, this is a very nice chocolate.

In the package are 5 small bars.  Each bar is 120 calories and is enough chocolate to satisfy my chocolate urges.  That’s a nice thing, as it provides a chocolate break without having to eat a whole bar of another brand which are generally much larger.  Of course, if one isn’t enough, you can always have another, and another, and another … well you get the picture.

Price $1.99 – 4.4 oz (125g) package (5 small bars in package)

Calories  140 per bar (280g per 2 piece labeled serving size)

ALDI – Earth Grown Chickenless Patties – Vegan – Food Review

04/20/2018

ALDI, Chickless Patties, review, vegan, price, calories, nutritionApril 20, 2018
Using oil to pan-fry, the patty stays together nicely.  Scrapping away some of the breading the underlying patty sort of looks like chicken.  Cooked; the breading is crisp, the mouth-feel is nice, the patty doesn’t fall apart.  The patty almost has the firmness of a thin real chicken patty.  Not surprisingly, the patty does not taste like chicken.  In fact there’s an interesting hint of fried okra.  Even with the slight taste of fried okra, the patty is perfectly edible as is without condiments.  With some lettuce, tomato, and mayo (not vegan), the taste is even better, but that fried vegetable taste still comes through some.  Substituting some aggressive guacamole for the mayo also worked well.

The product is labeled vegan.  For non-vegetarians, this soy protein based patty is an acceptable substitute for the real thing.  Unfortunately this seems to be one of those ALDI special items which are only around for a week or two.  But like most ALDI special items this one will probably make its way back to the freezer cases sometime in the future.

Barissimo Organic Peru Whole Bean Coffee – Food Review – ALDI

03/27/2018

aldi, whole bean coffee, medium roast, organic, fair trade, review, price3/27/2018
The beans are medium brown in color with the oil just starting to sweat from the beans.  There’s a nice aroma coming from the ground beans. This is a solid medium roast coffee.

There were plenty of CO2 bubbles when brewed, indicating a recent roast.  The aroma in the cup is mild.  As a medium roast, there’s a milder coffee flavor to go along with the mild aroma.  For the first few days I noticed a slight secondary flavor in the coffee beyond a coffee flavor.  After a few days, either I became accustomed to the secondary flavor or it dissipated from the beans.  In either case, it didn’t break the coffee.  In fact after a few weeks drinking this, I sort of missed it when I switched back to my everyday coffee.  The milder medium roast coffee flavor was a good break from my normal darker roast.

The coffee is labeled Fair Trade Certified and USDA Organic.  At a savings of a couple of dollars, or more, over similar quality coffee, this is a bargain for a good cup of coffee.  Price $4.79

ALDI – Specially Selected Torino Mint Chocolate Cookies – Food Review

02/02/2018

aldi, specially selected, mint chocolate cookies, review, price, calories, nutritionaldi, specially selected, mint chocolate cookies, review, price, calories, nutritionFebruary 2, 2018

These are pretty good cookies. There’s a nice mint chocolate center sandwiched between two cookies. I suppose the nearest comparison would be to a Pepperidge Farms Milano. This cookie is firmer than the Milano. It’s not as dainty.  While this may not be 100% as good as a Milano, it’s still good enough to eat the whole bag.  And it will save a little money over a Milano.

ALDI – Belmont Dutch Apple Crumb Pie – Food Review

01/02/2018

ALDI, Belmont, Dutch Apple Crumb Pie, review, calories, price, nutritionJanuary 2, 2017

Crumby, Crumbly, Caramba!

This is something that’s been in our freezer since around Thanksgiving.  Unfortunately, ALDI only seems to stock their fruit pies for the year-end holidays.  So you may need to wait for this to show up again.  When it does make its appearance again, this is a good one.

The “crust” is what makes this pie.  There are plenty of crumbs that cook up just perfectly in the oven.  This crust is nothing like the usual freezer pie crust that tends to be somewhat industrial.  Even the bottom of this crust is crispy and crumbly, tending to break into pieces as it’s extracted from the pie pan.

ALDI, Belmont, Dutch Apple Crumb Pie, review, calories, price, nutritionThe filling is good, with small pieces of apple mixed in with a sweet thick apple syrup.  I would’ve preferred more and larger pieces of apple and less of the syrup, but as noted above, this pie is all about the crust.

Calories  320 per slice,  9 slices per pie

Price – lost receipt, probably around $5

ALDI – O’Donnells Caramel Cream – Food Review

12/23/2017

aldi, o'donnells caramel cream, food, review, price, wineDecember 23, 2017

With the year-end holidays comes sleeping in and slow morning wakeups with a little spiked coffee.  At least that’s the tradition around this house.  The spike in the coffee usually takes the form of some Irish cream.

Here’s a new variation of the holiday tradition first reviewed here, O’Donnells Original Irish cream,  What could go wrong by adding some caramel flavor to the Irish cream?  Absolutely nothing.  For me, this is even better than the original.  The caramel flavor is not overpowering.  In fact it’s barely noticeable in the coffee.  But for whatever reason it tends to smooth out the beverage even more.  Very enjoyable.  Price $8.99

Moser Roth – Chocolate Truffles – ALDI – Food Review

12/09/2017

aldi, food, review, price, calories, nutrition, moser roth, chocolate trufflesDecember 9, 2017
ALDI has some surprisingly good chocolates.  This is one of them.  Without saying another word about these, they are really really good.

If you’re on a budget pick up one of these as a holiday present for your kid’s teacher.  If you’re not on a budget, get two.  They’re worth half a grade point on the kid’s next report card. Cheaper than a tutor!

Price $3.99 per box
