There’s a very nice, strong aroma coming from the glass on first pour which portends a full-bodied wine. The wine is fruity and dry at the same time in the mouth. There are no real negatives. Although for the very critical among us, there are hints of things to complain about. This is a blend of mostly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, according to the internet.
Generally this wine is a love or hate affair when reviewed on the web. About 2/3 of reviewers like this and think it’s a great value wine. The 1/3 of reviews which hate this may be due to some “bad” bottles. Although my guess is those bad reviews are prompted by personal preferences. Most of the reviews were for earlier vintages. There were very few 2015 vintage reviews.
While this is not a great wine, and would anyone really expect a great wine at this price, if you’re not afraid to challenge yourself by adding some complexity to a wine, this is an inexpensive way to do that. And you just might like it. I did. Price $5.99.

This Cab hails from Yecla, Spain. Briefly it’s an earthy, strong Cab that’s not very smooth bordering on rough. Along with the earthy mouth feel is a little heat on the tongue and back of the throat. Although I haven’t had any recently, this reminds me of a good two buck Chuck. In the glass the wine is a watery medium-dark red. This wine can easily overpower some foods. Other than the style, which some people may not like, there aren’t really any overpowering negatives. This is drinkable and not bad for a $5 wine as long as you like your wine and women (or men) strong and rough. One final thing, the wine is labeled as Kosher. Price $4.99.

There’s a deep ruby-red color in the glass and a hint of vinegar on the cork. A strange wet wood aroma emanates from the glass on first pour. This aroma diminished after exposure to air. In the mouth the wine seemed to change with each sip. It was an interesting experience that I suspect would create much conversation around the table as each person might have a different taste experience. Most of those changes were neutral to slightly positive. One or two of the changes were slightly negative. While not the finest example of a Bordeaux wine and possibly not even a good example, overall, the wine was drinkable and enjoyable.
Day two, with the wine exposed to air from the original uncorking and an overnight stoppered storage in the refrigerator, the wine produced some fruity overtones – for a short time. Gone was the wet wood aroma. Still present was one of the negatives, a slight off-taste at the back of the throat.

This is surprisingly good for $2.89. But there are better out there for a few dollars more. A weak red color for a Cab, leads to a slightly fruity aroma in the glass changing to an aroma of a rough red table wine. Nothing bad so far. The first sip is a little fruity and slightly sweet. In subsequent sips the sweetness is gone. There are no tannins to speak of which is consistent with the semi-dry description on the label. Maybe some oak, or something close to oak in the taste. The only negative is a somewhat strange type of astringency causing excessive cheek puckering. Don’t ask for pictures. I’m not sure it’s a Cab, if you’re expecting what’s commonly expected of a Cab.
Pairing with some leftover restaurant grilled chicken and chorizo (think spicy), it was not the best companion. The spicy food added to that cheek pucker.
The problem I’ve had in the past with very inexpensive wines (like $2 Chuck) is that the quality varies widely from bottle to bottle. I don’t know if that’s the case here, I’ve only had this one bottle. Would I buy it again? If I did it would only be to see how the next bottle changes from this one. For 3 or 4 dollars more it’s possible to get a much better red wine that’s consistently good – think Italian, think Tuscany, think DOCG, think sangiovese grapes. If you’re on a tight budget or think puckered cheeks are cute or just say one day, what the heck, give this a try. Otherwise pop for the extra few dollars. On the other hand if you’re at a major retailer that “also sells wine”, looking for a $10 bottle of wine, save yourself a few dollars and buy this one. Chances are this will be just as good. Price $2.89.

For a Cab, the color is a medium-red. This one tastes like a Cab. Mild tannins, a little bit of oak and the grapes add the character and the dryness of a Cab. There are no off-tastes unlike this recently reviewed wine. This is a fairly good wine, but not a very good or great Cab. There’s still quite a bit of roughness about this one. It’s not as smooth as a better Cab.
Cabs are on the stronger side of the wine taste scale. If your preferences run towards milder wines, this one is probably not for you. It would be hard to find an everyday food that would overpower this wine. On the other hand, this wine would overpower most milder foods. This was a September ALDI’s Wine Of The Month. However, it also seems to be a regular on the ALDI wine shelves. At $6.99 a bottle, this is a value price compared to a similar quality California Cab elsewhere.

This is perhaps the best everyday wine I’ve had this year.
Not that it means much, but on opening the pop from the cork was almost up to champagne standards. There’s a very nice deep purple color on the cork which complements the deep red color of the wine. The aroma is that of a full-bodied wine with fruity overtones. The tannins leave a dryness in the mouth, but not very much. No burn in the throat. This is something one could sip on all evening. Paired with an anchovy, Italian sausage, bacon pizza – it held its own. Honestly however, this is one wine that should be and is worth drinking by itself.

There’s a weak sweet aroma on the cork with a hint of vinegar. Overall, it’s a pleasant start. For a red, the color is also on the weak side – a medium red transparent color with hints of pink. Maintaining the trend, a weak wine aroma comes from the glass once poured. The wine has a light to medium dryness in the mouth. There are no bad tastes or other bad characteristics. The wine holds up well in the refrigerator for days two and three. In fact it may improve slightly. Other reviewers average this wine at about 3.5 out of 5. It’s a little better than that in my mind.
Overall, this is a fairly nice wine, even if on the weaker side for a Cab. At $9.99, it’s a reasonable price for good quality if you’re looking for a California wine.

Rustic comes to mind from first uncorking to finish. This is rough around all the edges, but not overly rough. From the Colchagua Valley of Chile, this is a good table wine. The wine is mildly dry on the roof of the mouth with a medium red color. The taste dissipates quickly making it difficult to pick up significant traits, either good or bad, except for a long lingering warmness in the mouth and beyond. Most importantly at this price, there’s nothing wrong with the wine. Especially if you’re in the habit of drinking wine with meals, this is a good inexpensive $4.99 red wine to accompany an everyday meal.
