This is another staple at home here. It may not be the creamiest peanut butter, but like many everyday items at ALDI it’s reasonably priced, good quality and similar in nutritional value to many major brands. It also tastes good and goes well with jelly. Calories 180/2 Tbsp (32g) Price $2.99 per 40 ounce plastic jar

ALDI – Sea Queen Crab Cakes – Food Review
03/16/2017My expectations weren’t high and they were met. These are crabby and mushy. That description is not uncommon when it comes to crab cakes. A really good crab cake consists of chunks of crab meat with a little bit of mayonnaise based filler to bind everything together and maybe a thin layer of breading to give it some crunch when it’s pan fried. Outside of one or two restaurants I’ve been to a long time ago, it’s hard to find anything like that. Most crab cakes in stores, and even restaurants, tend to be like this, with indistinguishable pieces of crab mixed with breading to form a crab mush which is then fried, or in this case baked at home. There was a good bit of crab flavor which was satisfying for those looking for a crab fix. But overall, like Diogenes, I’ll continue to look for the honest crab cake. Trader Joe’s Simply Nutty vs. Kind Dark Chocolate, Nuts, Sea Salt Bars – Food Review
03/04/2017It’s predominantly* almond (Kind) versus predominantly* peanut (Simply Nutty) in this nut-off challenge. For those who need to know quickly, Kind has the bigger nuts. That’s important, because when you bite into them, Kind requires a little more jaw power. However once in the mouth and chewed around some, the texture is indistinguishable between the two.
For those who like their nuts slightly salty, Kind would be your choice. In comparison, Simply Nutty is just that – not much of a salty experience here. Holding all the nuts together at the base, for both, is a dark dark brown chocolate. Some of the same is drizzled on the top of the nuts. I guess the drizzle is for decoration, but could be there for the lickers among us who might want to slowly savor the experience. Licking from the bottom would be too messy. So, the dark chocolate on both is very much the same, good, but nothing to write home about.

The products are very similar, with small individual preferences being the deciding factors between the two for most of us. Finally, these type of comparisons usually come down to price. The Kind bars are 4 bars for $4.99 and the Simply Nutty bars are 5 bars for $4.99.

Chateau Haut-Sorillon Bordeaux Superieur – 2013 – Wine Review – Trader Joe’s
02/23/2017There’s not much on the cork. In the glass there’s a deep red to purple color and not much aroma. This is a medium-light bodied simple red wine that tastes good and is easy to drink. There are a few tannins around to give the wine a little character, but not enough to upset very many people. There are no negatives.
There’s little information on the bottle or the internet about the grapes or process used to make this wine. Since it’s a Bordeaux, we can assume most of the grapes used in this wine are Cabernet and Merlot. Most other reviews on the web give this average ratings (3.5 out of 5). It’s a fairly mild red wine and should pair well with most foods except the most delicate. I could sip this all night – regrets in the morning of course. Price $8.99.
ALDI – Casa Mamita Chipotle Lime Salsa – Food Review

A warning: while this is labeled as medium heat there are touches of hot dispersed throughout.
Along with the strange heat characteristic is the strange taste characteristic. The strange taste which comes across as a form of bitterness appears to come from the diced tomato in the salsa. Getting back to the strange heat, this appears to come from very small pieces of garlic in the salsa. Whether that heat is native to the garlic or the garlic just absorbed the heat from some of its neighbors is up for debate. The texture is thick like a paste. This is not a chunky salsa, if that’s your preference. The salsa is labeled as organic.
If you’re willing to give this a try, buy a jar of your usual salsa to go with it. That way if this turns out to be too radical for your taste, there’ll be a backup plan on the shelf to go with the chips. Price $1.99 Calories 10 per 2 Tbsp. (31g)
Trader Joe’s – Cheddar Cheese with Caramelized Onions – Food Review
02/06/2017La Finca – Tempranillo – 2015 – Wine Review – Trader Joe’s
01/31/2017Unpretentious, that’s what a good table wine is. This is a wine which sits on the dinner table, gets passed around, doesn’t get in the way of the food, and doesn’t get in the way of the conversation. When the bottle’s empty someone grabs another bottle off the kitchen counter and the cycle repeats.
The wine has a mild earthy taste with just enough roughness around the edge to get your attention for a moment. There’s not much aroma to go along with a medium red color that makes the wine look watery. There’s not much bad about the wine. In fact it’s a nice wine. It’s just not the star of the show like some wines want to be. Good and unpretentious, that’s what a table wine should be. And for a price of $4.49 a bottle it’s easy to fill up that kitchen counter.
Vignobles Lacheteau – 2015 – Vouvray – Wine Review – Trader Joe’s
01/25/2017Aside from the most difficult screw cap I’ve ever encountered, this was a “sweet” wine. Well not sweet in the sweet taste sense, rather sweet as in very nice. The wine actually was slightly sweet to match the faint fruity apple flavor. The wine had a medium acidity as measured by my stomach and throat, but not enough to require medication. For me, this is one wine where a little bit of chill brings out the best qualities.
The wine comes from the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley in France. Although the bottle doesn’t specify the grape, that region is famous for the Chenin Blanc grape. That grape is likely the source of the juice that ultimately became this wine.
The wine generally gets above average reviews on the web, with some thinking it too sweet for their tastes. For me, a person who generally avoids white wines, I really liked this one. Price $7.99.
