Trader Joe’s Coastal Zinfandel 2007 – Wine Review

09/06/2010

One description of a Zinfandel is, “A powerful wine known for its pepper, spice and tannins …”.   Forget about the pepper, spice and other flavors attributed to any type of wine.  I’ve never been able to taste them.  TJ’s Coastal Zinfandel is powerful with heavy tannins.

Trader Joe’s Corn & Chile Salsa (Tomato-Less) – Food Review

09/04/2010

The jar says, “A sweet combination of corn, red peppers, onion and a touch of heat.”  And that it is.

Trader Joe’s “Tortilla Chips – with an Identity Crisis” – Food Review

09/04/2010

This is what happens when you don’t look closely at what you pick off the shelf.  If I had stopped and actually read the label, I probably would’ve left them on the shelf and looked for a “normal” tortilla chip.

Trader Joe’s President’s Reserve Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Food Review

08/22/2010

Trader Joe’s President’s Reserve Extra Virgin Olive Oil is:  Italian, cold pressed, good looking, good tasting, the right price and is surprisingly difficult to photograph.  The only thing that could make it more perfect would be a picture of Sophia Loren.

Trader Joe’s Black Bean & Cheese Taquitos – Food Review

08/14/2010

Once again.  It was cardboard boxes before.  Now it’s cut off pieces of plastic wrapping.  It’s not a bad picture.  It’s in focus.  I had to work little to get the glare off the plastic wrap label.  I could’ve spent more time getting the light even.  But taking pictures of labels, is that what life should be about?  I guess so.

Trader Joe’s Chianti Artisan Salami – Food Review

07/24/2010

Having been low on wine for at least a month, I made a long overdue trip to the Trader today.  While there, of course, it’s impossible to just come out of the store with what you thought you were going in for. So here’s a tasty extra which goes pretty good with the wine.

Trader Joe’s Eggplant Cutlets Parmigiana

06/26/2010

If I had ever looked ahead and discovered I’d eventually be taking pictures of cardboard boxes,  I never would’ve bought the camera.  But here I am again.  First it was the box of Trader Joe’s Spanakopita, and now it’s a box of Trader Joe’s Eggplant Cutlets.  But to make something good out of something bad (taking the picture of the box is bad, not the cutlets themselves), there are two very interesting things about the box.  Read on.

Trader Joe’s Spinach Pie – Spanakopita

06/12/2010

It’s not like Mama used to make.  But then, Mama never made Spanakopita.

The most amazing thing with this product is that it’s baked in the cardboard box it comes in.  And I’m not talking about microwave baking.  I’m talking about a real oven.  Right in the cardboard box, and no flames.

Lasagna with – Trader Joe’s Tomato Basil Marinara Sauce

05/29/2010

This was something of an experiment and another chance to pop open a bottle of wine.  While walking the Trader Joe’s isles, I noticed a section of spaghetti sauces.  Since the price was only a little more than the cost of ingredients for my home-made marinara sauce, I decided to put Trader Joe’s to the test.  In a nutshell, it worked pretty well, but is probably better used for a quick pasta sauce than for using in lasagna.

Spaghetti with Meatballs – Trader Joe’s Meatless Meatballs

02/05/2010

This is an easy one and one you probably don’t need to read.  However it does point back to the marinara sauce recipe which is what’s really important.  With a little crusty Italian bread to soak up any excess sauce on the plate, a glass of red wine, and Billy Joel playing on the stereo, it doesn’t get much better.
