Have you ever gone on a family road trip and arrived at your destination looking like everyone in the car has just left a zombie brain orgy? It’s the Simply Irresistible snacks like this that fill every rest area vending machine that are the cause. No, these will not turn you and the kids into mindless zombies. It’s the colorful coatings of these snacks that make it appear so. Whether flaming red, Big Bird yellow or the newly trendy orange-hair orange, these snack coatings with the tenacity of tattoos are sure to find their way from the food onto the hands, face and clothes requiring a visit by Shakespeare to remove them. “Out, damned spot!”
Getting back to the review. These remind me of Flamin’ Crunchy Cheetos or any one of several similar snacks. Trader Joe puts plenty of heat onto the snack. If you like that kind of heat and like snacks, you’ll no doubt like these. And like mine, your rather large bag of this snack will empty out just as fast as those smaller bags from the vending machines. Enough said.

Almost burnt pumpkin pie crust, that’s what these taste like. You know, no matter what we do, some part of that pumpkin pie crust is going to be burnt. Now I’m not talking about the stuff we buy from the store. That never seems to have burnt edges. I’m talking about the stuff that comes out of our oven. Whether it be a store-bought frozen pie cooked at home or a from-scratch homemade pie, once it gets in our oven there’s some part of that crust that’s going to be burnt. Wrap the edges with foil or stick a pin in a voodoo doll, some part of that crust is going to get burned. The oven makers must program that into their ovens. There’s no avoiding it.
These chips don’t taste like the absolutely burnt portions of crust, but like the almost burnt pieces next to the very burnt stuff. More specifically, it’s the parts of the crust where the filling overflows onto the edges. You know what those are. In fact, those pieces of crust are actually the pieces I break off and eat first. They sort of build anticipation for the rest of the pie with the pumpkin filling covered with whipped cream. Hmm, sounds like I know what I’m having for dessert tonight.
But enough about pumpkin pie. The first ingredient on the label of these chips is corn. So these are mostly corn tortilla chips with pumpkin puree used to add some pumpkin flavor. The back of the bag suggests these will hold up to any salsa. I have no reason to doubt that since they are very stiff chips. But it’s the taste of most salsas I question. It seems to me that what’s needed is a pumpkin pie dip/salsa to make these complete.

These are wonderful biscotti.
There’s a nice chocolate coating on the bottom edge of each biscotti. As the coating is sometimes a little uneven from end to the other end, there can be a slightly different experience with each bite. When the proportion of chocolate in the mouth is right, there’s a nice contrast between the semi-sweet chocolate and the mildly sweet almond flavor of the biscotti. When the proportion of chocolate is less, the almond flavor takes over and provides just as an enjoyable experience. Along with the plentiful almond flavor are slivers of almond laced throughout the biscotti. These are a crunchy biscotti.
These are a nice accompaniment to coffee or just as nice by themselves. However, at 120 calories each, it’s not something that can be readily indulged in. So if you can, I couldn’t, ration yourself to one a day, and thoroughly enjoy the experience.

It’s not Italian sausage. BUT, for a meatless meat (yes it’s labeled vegan), it has the texture, if not exactly the taste, of a meat. The texture is the biggest problem with many meatless meats. They, or we, can always work on how it tastes. In its own right, it’s fairly good tasting, but on the bland side.

Everyone wants to be hot. Most of us are not. And so it is with these chips.
While still not for the squeamish, these chips do not live up to the reputation of the howling hoblin hotty Habanero ghost pepper (Bhut jolokia) for which they’re named.
Most of the heat in the chips is felt on the lips. The best way to bring a quick tingle is to hold a chip between the lips for a bit. Call it a lip lick. As the seasoning varies some by chip, the more seasoned chips can also be felt on the tongue. The rest of the mouth is mildly involved by comparison unless the chips are taken by the handful and held in the mouth for some seconds. There’s a little earthy taste to these chips aside from the heat. That gives them some added interest. Perhaps just overpowered by the heat, the chips did not taste salty.
If you like heat in your food these will satisfy that need without causing a trip to the emergency room (not guaranteed), because in these chips the ghost is just a will-o’-the-wisp.

Sriracha Sauce has had its 15 minutes of fame. Like many other “instant” successes, Sriracha is still around even if not as prominent. Many companies have gotten on the Sriracha bandwagon over the last few years with their own Sriracha labeled product variants. Unfortunately many times these variants lose something in the translation. This chip is one product where much of the label has made its way into the product.
If you’re familiar with Red Hot Riplets chips, this compares in a tamer way. Instead of “dumbing down” the Sriracha flavor and heat to meet the lowest common denominator of the purchasing public, this chip retains a unique flavor and a heat which is above average for a chip. While spicier than most chips, the heat here is still in the mild to medium range. The lattice cut also adds a nice firm crunchy texture to the chip. When there’s a chip made from some previously little known vegetable (or anything in the plant kingdom), it’s a good guess that that vegetable will be the new superfood of the year. Or is it megafood of the year this year? And I’d guess, if I had to guess, we’ll be hearing more about parsnips pretty soon.
Now that we know how we got here, how are the chips? Surprisingly, these are much better than one might expect, considering that most of us don’t have a clue what a parsnip is.
The bag has a mixture of thin, moderately long and short, curly pieces of slightly orange crispy things in it. There’s not much flavor to them. A slight sweet flavor predominates. That’s about it. For a chip, there’s barely a hint of salt.
A good chip has only one real test, can a person sit and eat the whole bag in one sitting? For these chips, the happy answer to that question is, yes.

One description of a Zinfandel is, “A powerful wine known for its pepper, spice and tannins …”. Forget about the pepper, spice and other flavors attributed to any type of wine. I’ve never been able to taste them. TJ’s Coastal Zinfandel is powerful with heavy tannins.
