The beans are medium brown in color with the oil just starting to sweat from the beans. There’s a nice aroma coming from the ground beans. This is a solid medium roast coffee.
There were plenty of CO2 bubbles when brewed, indicating a recent roast. The aroma in the cup is mild. As a medium roast, there’s a milder coffee flavor to go along with the mild aroma. For the first few days I noticed a slight secondary flavor in the coffee beyond a coffee flavor. After a few days, either I became accustomed to the secondary flavor or it dissipated from the beans. In either case, it didn’t break the coffee. In fact after a few weeks drinking this, I sort of missed it when I switched back to my everyday coffee. The milder medium roast coffee flavor was a good break from my normal darker roast.
The coffee is labeled Fair Trade Certified and USDA Organic. At a savings of a couple of dollars, or more, over similar quality coffee, this is a bargain for a good cup of coffee. Price $4.79

The coffee is not bad, bearable and actually fairly good. There’s some bitterness in the cup, but not enough to stop drinking. The bitterness subsides as the coffee cools. The coffee has a decent body for a medium roast. On the scale of coffee goodness, this one falls above a McDonald’s or Denny’s coffee and below most Trader Joe’s offerings. The coffee is entirely drinkable black, which is how I review all coffees.
I picked this up because Trader Joe’s Honduran coffee is one of the better coffees I’ve reviewed. This isn’t as good, but still fairly good, especially for the price. Coffee plants just might have a thing for Honduras.
If you’re on a budget or just happen to be close to an ALDI when you find your cupboard bare of coffee, this one just might be good for you. The coffee is labelled fair trade and organic, so it may be good for the farmers and environment also. Price $4.79

Since espresso is a method of making coffee and not a particular coffee bean, the name is slightly misleading. However, since most coffees, including this one, can be used in espresso machines, we won’t quibble. And since I don’t have an espresso machine, this coffee was prepared by my usual French press method.
Typically coffee beans meant for espresso machines are dark roasted. This coffee fits in the Trader Joe’s medium-dark roast category (labeled dark roast on the can). It produced a nice cup of coffee in my press. It was largely indistinguishable from my everyday Tarrazu drinker. Perhaps it was a little more bitter. Regardless, it should work nicely in an espresso machine if that’s your preference.
For the extra two dollars per can over the Tarrazu, what are we getting? This coffee is labeled both organic and fair trade. That could be one reason to spend the extra two dollars. As for the word espresso on the can, it’s your decision whether this will produce a better espresso shot than your current coffee. Price $8.99 (13 ounce can)

The medium-dark brown fairly oily beans produce a nice aroma on opening the can. Once brewed, the coffee produces a strong taste which is mildly bitter on the tongue. As it cools, the coffee transitions to an earthy taste and the bitterness declines. The bitterness is a good bitterness, like a good beer has some bitterness to it. However as with many things, bitterness is an acquired taste. If you’re adverse to bitter tastes, this may not be a coffee for you. There’s some sense of acidity on the roof of the mouth and in the stomach.
This is a good coffee for people looking for a stronger tasting coffee without going over the edge. The coffee is labeled as both organic and fair trade. Price $7.99 (14 oz can)

The beans are large and dark with a satin sheen provided by a moderate amount of oil. The beans have a ‘roast’, but not burnt, aroma. Lacking is a real coffee aroma. First sip of the brewed coffee is bitter. The coffee remains bitter throughout the cup with the usual lessening due to the coffee cooling and the mouth adjusting to the bitterness. The bitterness overwhelms any other characteristics of the coffee. This is not a cup of coffee I look forward to having tomorrow. Comparing to my review of another Trader Joe’s Sumatra coffee from 2015, this appears to be a very similar coffee. A very coarse (chunky) grind and strictly controlling the brew time helps eliminate some of the bitterness producing a better, but still bitter, cup of coffee. Nice can design.

Trader Joe’s Breakfast Blend
This is perhaps the worst coffee at Trader Joe’s. Harsh and not tasting much like coffee at all, this breakfast blend may explain why so many people skip breakfast.
