U.S.A. GMO Issues – December, 2014 – One Grocer’s Thoughts

12/12/2014 by

Several readers have posted comments inquiring about the GMO status of various products reviewed on this blog.  A recent comment on our favorite tortilla chip prompted me to ask the grocer via email what the GMO content was for the tortilla chips specifically and their GMO policy in general.  The reply appeared well thought out and further briefly explained specific U.S.A. (United States of America) regulations (and non-regulations) which affect the food grown and consumed in the U.S.A.  As the grocer points out below, these regulations affect many other retail grocers in the same way.

So hopefully without me getting in the middle of the GMO debate, here is one retail grocer’s take on the status of GMO products in the U.S.A.  Note also the reference to USDA National Organic Standards mentioned in the reply (linked here).  Hope this helps you find the product(s) you want.

Grifone Chianti Riserva 2010

Grifone Chianti Riserva 2010

For $1.50 more and a couple of years more aging I was expecting great things from this wine in comparison to its IGT little brother recently tasted (Grifone Sangiovese IGT 2013).  What I got was at least $1.50 better wine.  But that’s not a bad thing, and just points out how good little brother is.

Grifone Sangiovese IGT – 2013 – Wine Review – Trader Joe’s

Grifone Sangiovese 2013

Grifone Sangiovese 2013

Pretty darn good for $4.49 at Trader Joe’s. This is an IGT classified wine, which just represents that the wine/grapes come from the specified region of Italy (Puglia in this case) and meet the other IGT specifications.  It’s a lesser designation than a DOC designation.  Well, it may not be up to the DOC requirements, but it’s still a pretty good wine and certainly worth the $4.49 price.

Coffee-Off – Medium Roasts – Food Review

08/29/2014 by

TJ_TarrazuCoffeeCoffee is the new wine.  Actually it’s been that way for some time now.  Where there used to be several national brands and a few regional brands which all delivered a pretty satisfactory cup of Joe in the morning to get the day going, there is now a bewildering array of “specialty” brands, blends and bedlam.  To complement this there is also a bewildering lexicon of creative befuddlement which ultimately takes your mind off the fact that you may actually be drinking a fairly bad cup of coffee.
