Grifone Sangiovese 2013

Pretty darn good for $4.49 at Trader Joe’s. This is an IGT classified wine, which just represents that the wine/grapes come from the specified region of Italy (Puglia in this case) and meet the other IGT specifications.  It’s a lesser designation than a DOC designation.  Well, it may not be up to the DOC requirements, but it’s still a pretty good wine and certainly worth the $4.49 price.

It’s a tad dry in the mouth, which is a characteristic of most red wines, but certainly not excessive.  There’s a little bit of a burn as it travels down past the tonsils.  But both just give the wine some character.  It would be a perfect wine to go with any dish made with a hearty tomato sauce.  The tannins are minimal.  There are no bad or off tastes as can be found in many inexpensive wines.  The wine is just plain good from any way you look at it.

I’m also looking forward to trying it’s older brother, a 2011 Chianti Riserva DOCG – for $1.50 more!

Overall, this Sangiovese is well worth its modest price and probably worth much more when compared with some of the pricier wines of lesser quality that sit next to it on the wine shelf.  Good stuff!
