Here’s another good whole bean coffee from Central America and Trader Joe’s. This is labeled as both fair trade and organic. The whole beans are given an extra dark roast.

There’s plenty of aroma when the can is first opened. It’s a nice deep aroma, but not especially a coffee aroma. These beans are dark and very oily – perhaps the most oil I’ve seen on beans. The inside of my small grinder was nearly completely covered with the oily dark grounds on day one.
On first sip, the coffee had a strong unpleasant taste. As with the aroma, it’s difficult to describe. Fortunately, either the off-taste quickly evaporated from the coffee or my taste buds died off. The second and subsequent sips had much less of the unpleasant taste. As the coffee cooled there was a hint of sourness in the brew. As with many dark roasts there’s an earthy taste left in the mouth long after the coffee has gone. As the coffee further cools, the earthy taste dominates the flavor.
On days two and three the initial unpleasant taste was gone. So either there was a “bad bean” in the first day’s brew or I hadn’t brushed my teeth in three days. No doubt it was the former. Also gone was the hint of sourness. I’ll attribute that to the later. What was left was the earthiness – attribute that to the coffee.
If a dark roast coffee is your thing, this is worth a try. Aside from the very first day, there were no negatives to this coffee. In fact, for a person who doesn’t especially like dark roasts, this may be the best dark roast I’ve tried to date. The coffee is labeled fair trade and organic.
Price $7.99 (13 ounce can)
