This is not a very sweet tasting bar, but that’s part of the appeal. There’s a nice undercurrent of sour cherries and dark chocolate. Oats are oats. The oats in this bar are a little tough and tasteless, as they are in most of these types of bars. But the cherry and chocolate let this bar stand out above the rest. If you’re ever in the Black Forest or even the Eifel Forest take a few of these alone.
I suspect these were part of ALDI’s Oktoberfest. So they may not be around again until next Oktoberfest or next spring for Maifest.

Oats, nuts, fruit loosely held together by a mildly sweet syrup. This is not a hard granola bar. In fact it will bend and start to break apart just getting it out of the package. There’s just enough syrupy binder to hold everything together. As a result, this is not a very sweet bar. If you’re looking to avoid something so sweet that your teeth start to hurt, you may like this. The other benefit is your fingers don’t feel like they’re covered with super glue. The mixture of ingredients in the bar should also help slowly feed energy to your body as the bar is digested. That will help to avoid an immediate sugar high. The fruit and nuts in the bar are more enjoyable than the oats in the bar. That’s to be expected. The chocolate was mostly hiding in my bars.
On the trail, the 140 calories in the bar should be good for about 1.5 to 2 miles down a relatively flat trail at a moderate pace. Off the trail, as a snack, that’s how far you’ll need to walk to burn off the calories. Did I just ruin your day?

The package says, “with just a hint of anise”, but for me that was the whole story. This is more like anise toast than almond biscotti. For anise toast, it was fairly good. There was a nice and proportionally strong anise flavor to the biscotti. The biscotti were firm, but still a little soft and not very crumbly. There were small pieces of nuts occasionally sprinkled throughout the biscotti. The package says almond and walnuts. But there was very little almond flavor to match the package label. So maybe the wrong biscotti got in the wrong box, or something like that?

With a fair amount of heat, but missing most of the different flavors of Indian cuisine, this is just an “okay” chicken tikka masala.
The heat in this product starts out mild and builds up to a medium-hot heat on the back of the tongue. While the heat level is good for people liking heat, many of the traditional flavors of Indian food are missing. The sauce has a medium tomato flavor with plenty of small pieces of tomato. Along with the tomato are ample amounts of tender chicken pieces.
The rice is the biggest disappointment. The rice cooked up rubbery, maybe indicating some over cooking after 6 minutes in the microwave. However after 6 minutes the sauce and chicken were merely very warm. While the rice is labeled basmati, the flavor was different, but not better, than the basmati I’m used to. There was a very mild heat to the rice.
There are better frozen chicken tikka masala products out there. If you’re in a pinch, or don’t have access to other sources, this will do – but not more.

Tomato sauce and ketchup, that’s basically what sloppy Joe sauce is. Well, a few other spices are also thrown in the mix. It’s pretty simple stuff for some pretty simple cooking. And that’s exactly what we need every once in a while. It doesn’t hurt much that when combined with some cooked ground beef and put on a fresh hamburger bun it’s some pretty tasty and satisfying comfort food. This sloppy Joe sauce is no exception.
Naturally a store brand like this is often compared to a brand name market leader like Manwich. Personally, Manwich seems a little more flavorful, spicier, whatever you’d like to call it. But the ALDI Sloppy Joe Sauce also adds a nice tang and taste to the final mixture and works just as well for a quick and easy comfort food at roughly 20 cents less per can.
Price – 79 cents (15 oz can, 425g)

Garlic literally wreaks from the package when first cut open. That theme continues until the last pasta shell has left the bowl. This is truth in advertising. And I’m all for the truth.
For the garlic lovers among us, this is a hit. Some water, milk, margarine/butter and the contents of the package are turned into a side dish which is just about as good as many restaurants serve, in about 15 minutes of cooking time. While the bag only contains two servings, these are two satisfying servings. In a pinch this might be stretched to three servings without people feeling the need for more. Click on images to enlarge. Price – 69 cents

As if struck by lightning, every so often I’m amazed at how many calories some foods have. A package of these fig bars has a total of about 1,400 calories in it, and costs only 99 cents. That’s pretty much a day’s worth of calories for someone who is inactive. Of course these calories are just about all carbohydrates which is good for providing energy, but not much else. Living off something like these alone would leave someone with a serious lack of protein. That’s the end of my lightening moment for today.
However, with moderation and self-control, these are a nicely sweet treat if you like figs.

Garlicky, salty, crunchy, edgy and 89 cents every day – what more could you want? Add a little zest to your salads or just grab a few straight from the bag to snack on, they’re pretty good. Personally, I do both. Other, milder, flavors are available. But the best part is they’re 89 cents every day, meaning there’s no need to wait for a sale.

If you need a guacamole fix, these are unlikely to satisfy. As a chip, they’re okay and in some ways sort of a mild Doritos.
Rather than have the flavor sprinkled on as an afterthought, these chips seem to have the flavor “baked” into the flour of the tortilla. In addition there’s still the traditional sprinkle of seasoning coating the chips. There’s a faint hint of guacamole in the flavor. As a flavored chip, the flavor is not objectionable. These, or at least this bag, do not taste overly salty. And like almost any chip, you’re likely to eat many more of these than you should.
I suspect these are a seasonal item. Although they showed up well after Cinco De Mayo, which one would think is the appropriate time? For me, a regular tortilla chip dipped in some real guacamole is the way to go.

In a seemingly endless number of nutty snack bars, here’s one more. To the possible delight of many readers, if this one becomes a permanent resident on the ALDI shelves, this bar seems to be a variation of the very popular but short-lived Simple Nut Bar.
Without having a Simple Nut Bar present for a side-by-side comparison, this Roasted Nut Bar seems very similar. From memory, my preference would be the Simple Nut Bar. But I could easily live with this one. Like the Simple Nut Bar, this one is mostly nuts. Comparing the back of the boxes (see Simple Nut Bar box here), the ingredients are very similar. Both are products of Canada. That leads me to believe these are produced by the same company and are just variations of the product formula.
There’s a minimal amount of sticky binder to hold all the nuts together (almonds, peanuts and sunflower seeds). If you’re looking for sweet, or chocolate, this is not for you. As the bar is mostly nuts, it is hard and crunchy. For a snack food, this has a reasonably good nutrition mix. Of course, being mostly nuts, a high percent of the calories come from fat (most likely the nut oils). Carbohydrates are lower than many other snack bars. While not a high power protein bar, these do have an okay 6 g of protein. Calories 180 per bar Price $2.79 per box (6 bars in a box)
