This isn’t a well-aged prime New York strip steak to be
dabbled with ketchup. And really that wasn’t expected.
This is something for the person who worries about food wastage or worries more about being able to eat this evening. With the primary ingredients of the steak being; mechanically separated chicken, beef, pork and soy protein concentrate, this product seems very old school. By old school, I mean, don’t waste any ingredient or any part of any ingredient. While we don’t exactly know which parts of what went into the grinder, we can evaluate what came out.
What came out of the grinder are six Salisbury steak patties and a whole bunch of gravy. The steaks are bland. The gravy has a touch of beef flavor to it. The texture of the steaks is somewhere between chewable and gumable. There’s nothing especially bad about the taste, and there’s nothing especially good about the taste. For hungry people on a budget none of this is going to matter because it’s also warm and filling.

The aroma and flavor are pleasantly smokey, reminiscent of a barbecue. The cheese is semi-soft to cut and creamy in the mouth. The smoke flavor is a nice contrast to the texture of the cheese. For $4.99 a pound this is a nicely flavored smoked cheese from Holland. If you’re in need of a smoked cheese and in or nearby a Trader Joe’s, this is a good and surprisingly economical choice.
Price $4.99 per pound Calories 90 per ounce (28g)

The second ingredient is cream. That’s a good sign as that’s what an Alfredo sauce is all about. From the jar the sauce is a little watery, as water is the first ingredient. However it thickens some when added to warm pasta. Even better is heating the sauce either before the pasta is added or after the pasta is added. To save a pot, and some cleaning, I added sauce straight from the jar to the cooked warm pasta and then nuked the plate in the microwave for about a minute. That thickened up the sauce and made it stick to the pasta nicely. There’s a suggestion on the jar which hints at the need for heating the sauce to thicken.

The star here is the corn masa. The dough (masa) retains a nice taste and texture, neither too dry and certainly not wet, in its trip from freezer to microwave. Although there’s not much of it, the cheese is chewy and stringy. Green chilies are randomly placed throughout the cheese, but otherwise not very noticeable. The heat level is mild unless you get a big piece of chile, then it’s a medium heat. By far the cheese filling is a minor player. The tamales come wrapped in nicely trimmed corn husks.

This is another staple at home here. It may not be the creamiest peanut butter, but like many everyday items at ALDI it’s reasonably priced, good quality and similar in nutritional value to many major brands. It also tastes good and goes well with jelly. Calories 180/2 Tbsp (32g) Price $2.99 per 40 ounce plastic jar

My expectations weren’t high and they were met. These are crabby and mushy. That description is not uncommon when it comes to crab cakes. A really good crab cake consists of chunks of crab meat with a little bit of mayonnaise based filler to bind everything together and maybe a thin layer of breading to give it some crunch when it’s pan fried. Outside of one or two restaurants I’ve been to a long time ago, it’s hard to find anything like that. Most crab cakes in stores, and even restaurants, tend to be like this, with indistinguishable pieces of crab mixed with breading to form a crab mush which is then fried, or in this case baked at home. There was a good bit of crab flavor which was satisfying for those looking for a crab fix. But overall, like Diogenes, I’ll continue to look for the honest crab cake. Calories 170 per crab cake Price $5.49 – package of 4 cakes, plus cocktail sauce

Now I’m not the world’s most prolific falafel eater. But I have had them in restaurants. And for no other reason then to attempt to pronounce the name, you should give them a try sometime when you’re around Mediterranean food. If you do want to give them a try, DON’T (do not) try these.
A falafel is one of those foods that’s a blank canvas to which the chef has to add the splashes of color (metaphorically). These have few splashes of color.

Andy Warhol would be proud!
Here we have another two mundane food items up for review. It’s a chicken noodle soup-off between ALDI’s Chef”s Cupboard Chicken Noodle Soup and America’s sweetheart Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup. And while the ties are still in the dry cleaner for spot removal, the winner is Andy Warhol’s poster child, Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, with the one exception of price. Campbell’s costs significantly more. But I’m guessing you knew that already. So click the “read more” button below to further unravel the noodles.

A warning: while this is labeled as medium heat there are touches of hot dispersed throughout.
Along with the strange heat characteristic is the strange taste characteristic. The strange taste which comes across as a form of bitterness appears to come from the diced tomato in the salsa. Getting back to the strange heat, this appears to come from very small pieces of garlic in the salsa. Whether that heat is native to the garlic or the garlic just absorbed the heat from some of its neighbors is up for debate. The texture is thick like a paste. This is not a chunky salsa, if that’s your preference. The salsa is labeled as organic.
If you’re willing to give this a try, buy a jar of your usual salsa to go with it. That way if this turns out to be too radical for your taste, there’ll be a backup plan on the shelf to go with the chips. Price $1.99 Calories 10 per 2 Tbsp. (31g)

I wonder if the jar was mislabeled? Except for on the label, what seems to be missing is the pineapple. There are plenty of references in the ingredients to pineapple. But if they’re in the jar, I missed them.
To be fair, wash away the red stuff and there really are pieces of pineapple in the salsa. Take a spoonful of the salsa by itself and there’s an interesting complex blend of flavors. On a chip, the complexities are muted.
I was expecting a sweet-hot salsa experience. What seems to be in the jar is a very mild tomato based salsa.
Aside from expectations, this is a nice tasting mild salsa. If that’s what you’re looking for give this a try. But if you’re expecting a pineapple experience, move on.
