On the way back to the car, but before my tired eyes gave out (click here to see the first part of this tale of woe), I caught dinner. Actually, this great egret caught dinner. More precisely, I caught him catching dinner. Technically, I caught the light reflecting off him catching dinner, and his catch. On the way back to the car, sunburnt, muddy, insect bitten, tired and smelly sweaty, after a day chasing birds like this around lakes and ponds, never really getting as close as I’d like, this great egret decides to return to his favorite fishing spot about 35 feet from where I was walking. He’s a hair, or would it be a feather, out of focus because at that point my old eyes were too tired to work well with my old manual focus lens.

Mr. Mallard walked out of his pond about 15 feet away. I threw him a handkerchief to clean his nose. But he was happy the way it was. Nonetheless, I felt obligated to take his picture.
Forces Of Nature – Tornado Damage (3 pictures)
There’s nothing pretty here. This is relatively minor damage from a 2011 F4 tornado that skipped along the ground for at least 7 miles. A half mile from here a portion of a subdivision was completely flattened. Hundreds of other homes were damaged, some so badly they had to be torn down. Pictures don’t begin to show the force these storms have. Be safe when they’re around.

Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly is my best guess for this guy which is most likely a female. She decided to land on a damp sandbar along a lake long enough for me to take her picture. Thank you Spicebush.
