King Kong (1933) – movie review

01/25/2010

There’s mystery in the air.  From the cargo vessel loaded with explosives, with 3 times the number of crew needed for a ship this size, planning to leave the harbor before the authorities board it in the morning, traveling to an unknown destination known only to a strange P. T. Barnum-like movie producer looking for a star for his movie in the homeless shelters, to the black and white images almost always shot in poor light  or fog with portions of the scene too dark to see into, there’s mystery in the air in what many people have on their list of all-time best movies.

WordPress – .com vs. .org – speed and freedom

Speed And Freedom

.com is sort of slow to edit                    .org is better

Speed counts. Normally we’d think of this as how fast your blog posts are served up to your readers. That hasn’t been a problem so far with either  the .com or .org version. What you’ll notice more is how slow it is to edit your posts directly on .com using the built-in editor.

WordPress – .com vs. .org – custom header

Custom Header

.com makes it easy                      .org is more difficult

Almost no WordPress blog stays with the basic blue and white text header for very long.  (more…)

Miep Gies – Profiles In Courage

01/11/2010

The headline noted, Miep Gies dies at age 100. I did not, as you might not, recognize the name.  However the name next to hers I recognized. That name was Anne Frank. You may not recognize the second name either. While the opportunity is present, and before the headline passes into the ethernet (hopefully to be cached forever by Google), take a few minutes to read about both.  Here’s the url to the headline.

Canned Soup – not the obvious

01/05/2010

You might have read other recipes on this blog and noticed there’s no sin here in taking a can off the shelf, opening it and using it to make something good.  There’s also no sin in using dried herbs and spices.  If they’re not as flavorful as fresh herbs and spices, just use a little more. There are times when cooking may be a hobby to us, and times when cooking is a way to get food into the stomach.  Most of the recipes here are of the food in the stomach variety.  But food in the stomach that tastes a little better than straight out of the can or freezer and doesn’t take a weekend to gather ingredients and prepare.

WordPress – .com vs. .org – differences

01/03/2010

As many of you may know, there are two versions of WordPress available.

The first is the WordPress.com hosted version. About 200,000 of you use this version to publish content on the internet without having to worry about servers, routers, operating systems, bandwidth, up time and other technical details which 199,999 of you don’t really care about.

The second version is WordPress.org. WordPress.org provides most of the software (programs) that run in the background to power a WordPress based blog. It’s up to you to provide, fund and worry about all those technical details that 199,999 other people don’t care about. Having said that, for under a $100/year you can find someone (a company) to provide and worry about most of those technical details for you. However, you will still need to have a fair amount of geek in you to run your own WordPress.org.  That geek in you is needed for some of the differences listed below.

Lasagna – what to do with the tomato sauce?

01/01/2010

Now that we’ve mastered the art of the can opener by making the tomato sauce, the next basic skill a master chef must acquire is opening the box. Then the answer to the question, “What to do with the tomato sauce?”  is, lasagna.

Tofu U – Part 1 – Italian Style

12/29/2009

Margaritas tonight.

Every 2 years, another failure.  That’s how often I give tofu a try, and how successful I’ve been in the past.  I’m sure somewhere there’s a way to cook tofu that turns out to be actually good.  Ain’t found it yet, but haven’t given up.   The pictures of tofu with grill marks straight off the barbeque look great.  Haven’t tried it that way, but I suspect in the end, another failure.  At least by my tastes. In fact the only tofu I remember being half-way good was in a Chinese restaurant surrounded by meat and vegetables with a lot of good tasting sauce on everything.  Maybe that’s the way to cook it?   Go to your local Chinese restaurant and order it there.  Here’s this year’s biennial challenge.

Tofurky® Roast

12/27/2009

The son’s a vegetarian.  Really, he just doesn’t eat meat.  To call him a vegetarian would imply some sort of conviction which usually eludes him.  The actual rule is, don’t eat anything with eyes.  I guess potatoes would be an exception.  I wonder where artichoke hearts fit in the vegetarian diet?
