If the package wasn’t different I wouldn’t know these were not the same chips as the Trader Joe’s chips reviewed last week.  That’s three “nots” in the same sentence.  To say it more clearly, these chips seem to be from the same supplier as the similar Trader Joe’s chips, except for one thing, these have more flavor.

I expect the flavor difference is due more to normal variations in how much seasoning is put into each bag, than to different specifications between the ALDI and Trader Joe chips.  If, by some chance, you like these chips there are other differences between the two choices.  The first difference is price, 20 cents less at ALDI.  The second is quantity, 1.5 ounces more at ALDI.

While the TJ chips were lacking the “horse snort” type of nasal burn from good horseradish, the ALDI chips had this – but only sometimes.  The taste seemed to vary greatly from chip to chip.  And as I got closer the bottom of the bag, the chips seemed to have more seasoning.  That snort sort of makes sense as the seasoning starts to fall off the chips and settle to the bottom.  For anyone not familiar with horseradish, but might be familiar with sushi,  the green wasabi paste, often found along with sushi, tastes and acts a lot like horseradish (and some would say, is commonly mostly horseradish).

The chip texture is also very similar between the two store brands.  These chips are industrial strength.  They may not be hard enough to crack a tooth, but if you did, you’d miss it because the noise in the mouth while chewing these chips is similar to a rock crushing machine.

Overall, these are still not great chips in my mind.  While there were more chips with the expected horseradish effect, the majority of the chips lacked enough seasoning. The good or bad news (if you like them) is that these chips probably won’t be around for long.  ALDI is notorious for bringing in items like this for a weekly special and then never stocking them again on the shelves.  Trader Joe’s is more likely to stock items like this longer, but also seems to turn over their available chip selections often.
