 Basic tomato sauce marinara

Simple, fast, inexpensive and tastes better than just about anything that can be purchased.  A thick rich flavorful tomato sauce that forms the basis of other things Italian.  Once you’ve made the sauce here’s a great use for it, lasagna.  Although the sauce itself is so good by itself, you’ll need to stop yourself from eating it straight out of the pot.

As always, most measures are approximate and subject to change without notice by you.

1 – 15 ounce can, tomato sauce

1 – 6 ounce can, tomato paste

6 – cloves garlic, minced

1 – small or medium onion minced

2 – tablespoons oil olive, extra virgin

1 – tablespoon oregano, dried

1 – tablespoon basil, dried

1 – tablespoons parsley, dried

1/2 – teaspoon salt

1/4 – teaspoon pepper

1 – teaspoon sugar – adjust according to taste

Combine all ingredients except sugar in a medium covered sauce pan.  Simmer covered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning on the bottom of the pot and to distributed flavors.  At the end of the cooking period, add the sugar, taste the sauce, add more sugar if needed.  The sugar balances any bitterness from the other flavors.
