The gluten is gone, and with it the flavor.

March 7, 2016

Once prepared, this appears to be a normal everyday macaroni and cheese.  There’s the usual nice artificial looking yellow color covering the short hollow tubular pasta pieces.  The trick with this macaroni and cheese is that the noodles are made of rice pasta. making them gluten free according to Trader Joe.  The warm soft texture is still there regardless of what the pasta is made from.  It’s as comforty as a comfort food can be.

The problem is, somehow the flavor from the cheese is gone.  While the cheese packet is also labeled gluten free, I’m not sure that has anything to do with the lack of cheesy flavor.

The product requires the usual amount of cooking and food prep as most boxed macaroni and cheeses.  Boil the noodles, drain and mix in the cheese packet and milk.  That’s all it takes.  Of note, the price is about twice that of a traditional wheat-based macaroni and cheese.  The product is also labeled as vegetarian.
