Trader Joe’s Cheddar & Horseradish Potato Chips

$1.99 wasn’t too much to lose.  With a flavor combo like this on the bag, I couldn’t leave them on the shelf.  Curiosity got the better part of me.  Maybe it was the worst part, because it sure didn’t turn out so well.

These are neither cheddary, horseradishy, chippy or salty.

The chip itself is a thick ripple cut chip.  I’m not a big fan of ripple chips, preferring my chips to be either thin cut or kettle cut.  With the thick ripple cut, these chips came out neither thin nor kettle cut.  The best way to describe them is perhaps a kettle cut with a few rebars thrown in for extra strength.

In general I like the self-punishment from horseradish.  That burning in the nasal passage like you’ve just be maced brings about a certain amount of enjoyment.  Not that I’ve personally experienced mace, but rather one can imagine the experience.  At the very least a bit of horseradish on some food entices one to reach for a beer chaser – that’s a good thing.  And certainly, horseradish will clear the sinuses much better and with less expense than a trip to the doctor’s office.  Other than a brief tingle when first bitten, these chips had none of the advertised horseradish experience.  Even that little tingle was more like a caustic vinegar tingle than a true horse snort.

There’s nothing like a good strong cheddar.  When describing these chips that sentence becomes, there’s nothing like a good strong cheddar in these chips.  It’s hard to even find a mild cheddar flavor in the chips.  So it’s strike three at the old ball game.

Finally, looking for some saving grace, but not finding it, these chips are not even salty tasting.

Price $1.99 (7 ounce bag)     Calories 140 per ounce (about 10 chips)

I had to read between the lines but I got the impression you were too impressed with these chips nor the package’s description of them.

They are pretty bad on any level. Maybe this is one of those fad food items that comes and goes quickly. If so, I’ll be waiting until the fad has passed.
