Still the same, even if the name is not.

I recently re-reviewed ALDI’s Schogetten chocolate. Here’s a re-review of ALDI’s Choceur chocolate. Both re-reviews are prompted by a recent comment to an older post mentioning an absence of the hazelnut variations at that reader’s ALDI. I’m happy to state that the hazelnut and other variations of the Choceur chocolates are still available – at least at my local ALDI.
It’s a very humbling experience to go back 3 years and read something you’ve written. WHAT did I mean back then?
My original review of this product was positive. And it still is positive. Although I like it a little less now. The chocolate doesn’t seem to taste as dark. It’s more of a milk chocolate taste now even though the package lists “50% cocoa”. Maybe it’s the hazelnuts and crisps that dilute the chocolate taste? It could just be me becoming more of a chocolate purist over time.
Aside from my perception of the product taste, there are a couple of other differences. The name of this variation has changed from Creme Filled Mini Chocolate Bars to Dark Hazelnut Crisp. The product descriptions are similar. Of note, the old package says “semisweet” and this one says “dark” chocolate. There’s also a UTZ Certified stamp on the package now. This certification refers to how the cocoa was grown. See Wiki to learn more about UTZ.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the price. It’s still $1.99 for a 7 ounce package of 11 bars.

Just out of curiosity my wife, daughter, and I recently went into an Aldi in a strip mall after diner at a nearby restaurant. I hadn’t been in an Aldi for at least 10 years. Nice clean store with very low prices but mostly stocked with brand names we were not familiar with. Not necessarily a bad thing, just need to learn what is good and what is not.
Because of the price I bought a Choceur chocolate bar with hazel nuts. Both the chocolate and nuts were good but I did not like the combination. For me there were way too many nuts so I didn’t get all the chocolate taste I was craving. We will definitely be going back to Ali and will try different Choceur products.

ALDI is a different place. Maybe I’ll write a post on how to shop ALDI. There are three major themes to ALDI. The best are the regular everyday imported items like their two store brands of chocolate and their butter cookies. The next are their imported special items that are only around for a week and maybe only once a year. The liqueur cakes are an example of this. They’re only available around May and September. The last are the domestic ALDI store brands which we can guess are sourced from the same suppliers as every other store brand and usually priced lower. We have regular items we purchase in each category. The Italian and German wines are usually good too, even if there is a very limited selection. I’ll note that an ALDI is close to our house, so that’s always a consideration on where to shop. I can’t explain why hazelnuts are so popular in just about everything?
