Now I’m not the world’s most prolific falafel eater. But I have had them in restaurants. And for no other reason then to attempt to pronounce the name, you should give them a try sometime when you’re around Mediterranean food. If you do want to give them a try, DON’T (do not) try these.
A falafel is one of those foods that’s a blank canvas to which the chef has to add the splashes of color (metaphorically). These have few splashes of color.
A falafel is basically a deep-fried ball of ground chick peas (garbonzo beans). Without the addition of other ingredients to give them some flavor and maybe a little zing, they would be pretty tasteless. And while the ingredient label for these falafel reads like that flavor and possible zing have been added, the end result is a pretty tasteless ball of fried dough.
Falafel is seldom eaten by itself. Usually there’s some onion, cucumber, tomato and a sauce in a pita bread along with the falafel. All that would help cover up these falafel. But still a falafel should be able to stand by itself and be a positive addition to the whole. These falafel didn’t meet that test. Falafel prepared the right way is much better than this.

I have a bag sitting in my freezer right now. After reading what you said it might just have to stay there a bit longer

I found a few other reviews on the web before I published this. Two reviewers liked it. One from Chicago, was like me, unimpressed. Chicago, like NYC, has some pretty good neighborhood ethnic restaurants for comparison.

Agree they are bland by themselves. Actually I had them heated with hommous and tabouli inside a rye wrap during the week. Delicious!!!

Sounds great! I think I’ll be taking a quick trip to our local Mediterranean restaurant really soon. 🤔
