Fat bastard – Shiraz 2007 – Wine Review

The first question that comes to mind is,  what’s a Fat bastard?

Aside from the obvious, and the name of a character in an Austin Powers movie, “Fat bastard” is a brand of wine.  Having had several bottles over the past few years, it’s a good inexpensive wine.  The Shiraz referred to in this review is a product of France.  As such, we would expect it to be a good wine.  And it is.

This particular wine was in my under $10 price range, being on clearance for $4.99.  Well worth  $5 or a dollar or two more at the normal full price.  Although a red wine, the taste is less earthy than some other red wines.  For those of you who don’t like that dry earthy taste of a strong red, this wine might be a good choice.

While not earthy, the wine has a funny aftertaste to it which I can’t really explain.  It’s not a bad taste, but it’s something that makes the other wines reviewed here more attractive to me.  You’ll have to try it yourself to see how it pleases your taste buds.

Would I purchase this again?  Yes, because the price was good and the wine is drinkable.  In the past I’ve purchased other Fat bastard wines and have been generally happy with them.  Given a choice between this particular wine and year, and another wine I was familiar with in the same price range,  I’d probably choose the other wine.

Bottom line,  a good wine at a modest price.   But, you’ll need to try it to see how well it fits your personal tastes.

The wine label, and web site, have some contrived story behind the name Fat bastard.  The term is supposed to mean “great”.
