Trader Joe’s Vegan Tikka Masala – Food Review

Trader Joe’s Vegan Tikka Masala

This is another fine Indian-style frozen entrée from Trader Joe’s.  At $3.49 it’s a little on the pricey side when compared with other frozen entrées, but not pricey when compared with going out for lunch.

There is a nice tasty creamy tomato based sauce with medium heat surrounding the tikka which are small  ‘vegan meat balls’.   The basmati rice grains are nicely separated, dry and not sticky.  There’s a proper mild heat to the rice.  I didn’t taste much cumin in the rice as the product label claims.  Regardless, the rice was just right.  You may need to add another 30 microwave seconds to the second part of the cooking time to fully heat the sauce.

A word of caution.  One of the ingredients of the vegan meat balls is “vital wheat gluten.”   If you and gluten don’t get along, this may not be a good choice?  The box is also labeled as “Contains Wheat, Soy, Coconut, Cashews.”

Since I’m now using my finger to get the last bits of sauce out of the container, my conclusion is, this is very very good.

Agree with your review but would definitely not repurchase since the tikka was so bad/bland. It tasted like plane meat on my international flights, and that’s not a go. Liked the sauce, just wish I could taste the kick of cumin and Indian spice like authentic dishes have. The rice was a little too long-grain-dry too. If they sold the sauce separately for a fraction of the price, I’d buy it and spice it up myself.

Thanks again. Agreed, I find few of these frozen items that come up to good restaurant standards. So I sort of dumb down my expectations, knowing there are worse out there.
