ALDI – Season’s Choice Black Bean Chipotle Burger – Food Review

This was quite a surprise to find a mainstream store carrying something so spicy. Have the Zantac ready!

Although this is titled with the words, Black Bean, corn seems to be the predominate identifiable ingredient.  Brown rice is at the top of the ingredient list.  However there are obvious black beans in the patties, so the product name is somewhat fair.

Veggie burgers usually have a different texture than a beef hamburger.  I’m not sure that’s ever going to change.  These veggie burgers are no exception.  To their credit, the texture here is better than most. Biting into the whole corn kernels is however a different experience.  It’s not a bad experience, it’s just not expected.  The patty is not dry, but also not moist.  That’s another common trait of a veggie burger.

What is very unique about this veggie burger is the amount of heat that’s been added to the product.  Personally, I like the heat.  However it may be too much for some (most) people.  Getting past the heat, the actual flavor is strange.  That would be strange as in not common, not strange as in, OMG what did I just eat!

Overall, I liked these.  To me, they’re about as good or better than any veggie burger I’ve tried.  Because they don’t taste like cardboard, I didn’t have to supplement their flavor with a bunch of add-ons.  ALDI doesn’t label these as vegetarian, but the ingredients would probably pass most people’s vegetarian test.

Calories  130 per patty – 4 servings per container (10 oz. total – 284g)
Price  $2.49 per box

Is this burger actually vegetarian? The ingredients list Beef Flavor (Natural). Sounds like meat to me. But there is no phone number on the package to call.
