A gob of sticky rice,  a mess, a few green things and a tasty sauce describes this microwave boxed meal.  Trader Joe needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.

February 18, 2016

The main flaw with this quick microwave boxed meal is the way it’s cooked.  The cooking container started to delaminate in the microwave.  Instead of a solid plastic container as most frozen meals have, this container had some sort of black film covering a white base.  The black film started to pull away from the white base as it was heated.  After an initial 3 minutes heating, the sauce and rice, in two separate compartments, had to be stirred.  That’s pretty standard for frozen meals.  The problems were; the sauce was still frozen in the middle and the rice was too sticky to stir.  The individual compartments were too small resulting in some of the contents overflowing, creating somewhat of a mess.  Once stirred,  a second 1 minute heating was needed.  Finally, the rice and the sauce had to be emptied onto a plate.  What’s the point of a convenience frozen meal if you have to clean dishes?

The eating experience wasn’t a much better experience than the cooking experience.  The jasmine rice came out in a big sticky not very tasty lump.  That’s not my idea of jasmine rice.  The sauce was short on vegetables also.  There were a few anemic green things that looked like string beans, a couple of pieces of baby corn,  and fewer still other unidentifiable vegetables in the sauce.  The one bright spot was the mildly hot tasty curry sauce – but not enough in my opinion.  The product is labeled as vegan.

I totally agree!! Really tasty sauce.. a few beans.. that still had the strings in them and were inedible.. two tiny little cobs of corn… They covered themselves legally by saying the photo on the front is a “serving suggestion”. Shame on you Trader Joe’s!!! Oh.. the calories for this “meal”.. 590!!!

Oh noes! I see this is another, good-sauce-but-not-enough-to-like-the-whole-box-and-repurchase item. Thanks for the heads up. *takes it off list*

Sounds frustrating and, to say the least, disappointing. Good review of a bad idea.

Good review. Certainly won’t be buying it. Shame as the packaging photo looks good but certainly don’t like anemic green things. Ha ha.

Thanks. That is a nice picture on the box. Looked nothing like my plate. Oh well, there’s always something new to try.
