Holland 1839 Beer – ALDI
This is an okay European style lager imported to the US from Holland.
Typical European lagers are more bitter than American style lagers. That’s the case with this one. Of note, the bottle is 330 ml or 11.2 ounces. I’ll have to check whether that’s typical of all imported beer or this one might have been packaged for domestic use and then labeled for the US. There is also no alcohol content or calories indicated on either the cardboard carrier or the bottle. The cap requires a real bottle opener. If it was supposed to be a twist off, I failed the test.
The label says brewed and bottled by, H. West, Maarssen, Holland. I didn’t easily find any information about this brewery on the web other than it’s a subsidiary of another brewery. I didn’t feel like following the bread crumbs to find out who really owned the company. Surprisingly, or maybe not, I found plenty of other reviews for this beer on the web. In general other people rate this as an average beer, with scores around 2.5 to 3, on a 5 point scale. Those ratings seem fair enough.
In summary, if you like a European style beer, are low on brew at home or need some fast, can’t easily find your usual brew, and are in ALDI, you won’t go very wrong picking up a six-pack of 1839.

This beer is called Bavaria beer in Holland and is brewed by Swinkels family which owns one of the largest breweries in the southern part of the country.

It is very affordable and goes down smooth. It has a semi- sweet and nutty taste, and the alcohol content is not strong.
It is definately a good Laeger for the money. I rate it 4 out of 5.

330 ml…did you mean you wondered if the “amount” is typical? If so, it is. And in general, an average (not quality, just in alcohol content) beer from Europe or Holland has 5% alcohol, which may be why they didn’t label it (since 3.5% or so is normal for US consumption…and the main reason for over abundance of American beer bellies). I’ve got a beer on my shelf labeled “Amsterdam Maximator” at 11.6%. It says it’s imported. You might want to see if you can get your hands on one of those puppies. One! Of those puppies.

Thanks. That was the question, 330ml is only 11.2 ounces – not the typical 12 oz bottle of domestic stuff. That assumes the domestic bottle hasn’t also shrunk like everything else (except beer bellies). Maximator, means I’d miss another sunrise – maybe a sunset too. I’ll have to try that experiment.
