14 Days On Clear Fluids – and Ensure® – Day One

by

A quick trip in and out of the hospital leaves me in a sad state of affairs.

It’s a sad state of affairs not for health reasons (I’m at least hoping not for long-term health reasons), but because I have to maintain a clear fluids diet for the next 14 days (counting today, because every day is going to count going to 14).  Just to clarify, that’s a clear fluids only diet.  Just to clarify the clarification, clear means “one can look through it”.   Start thinking about what foods are really clear.   There’s not  much out there.   About the only see through foods are things like the holes in Swiss cheese.  And we can’t eat the holes as a matter of definition.

As for the definition of  fluid, fluid is not the motion of a big chunk of steak as it’s thrown on the grill.  Fluid is not the shimmering simmer of risotto as it cooks.  Fluid is not the bubbling of mozzarella cheese on top of a pizza in the oven.  Fluid is not the pouring of blueberry muffin batter into the individual cups of a muffin pan.  Fluid in this case is something that can be poured into the mouth, bypasses the teeth, and goes straight to the stomach through the esophagus.  There’s maybe a fleeting moment for tasting on the tongue.  But that’s it.  No more!

The hospital approach:

hot broth – flavor and source unspecified (and likely, unknown)

jello – various colors (known) and flavors (up for discussion)

juice – apple or orange (hard to go wrong here)

iced tea – better than most of that stuff that comes out of a dispenser in a fast food restaurant

hot coffee – hospitals have the best hospital coffee – no argument about that – just don’t compare with any other coffee

Ensure® – it’s not clear, can’t see through it – how does this qualify? – I guess they make the rules

Ice water – straight from the public works department

In a fleeting honest moment, let me just say of my three “meals” while an honored guest of the hospital, the warm broth rocked.  Whatever it was, it was what I needed at those moments.

Thirteen days to go.

Have you tried Resource? It’s safe for liquid diets. http://www.vitalitymedical.com/resource-fruit-flavored-beverage.html

Thanks for the information Reggie. I’ve pretty much settled on Boost for the remainder of my clear liquid diet (even if Boost, like Ensure, isn’t really clear?). More to come on the Boost decision shortly.
I’m sure others who need this kind of diet longer term will be happy to have some alternatives. Resource got some pretty good reviews.
